Organizing Your Grant Writing

Big Image

In order to be a successful grant writer you simply must be well organized. Putting a grant proposal together requires you to gather and sort out lots of information. The following guidelines will help you to get your act together and write great grants quickly.

Gather Information

Before you do any writing at all, it is important to gather all of the information you will need to complete the grant proposal. This will help you to write in a smooth and uninterrupted manner once you start.

Sort Information

As you gather information, sort it into piles that correspond to the sections of the proposal to be written. Keeping the piles in the order you’ll write them in is a good idea.

:

Use Templates

Having a template for any type of writing you do on a regular basis is a good idea, and grant writing is no exception. Having a separate template for federal, state, and private grant applications with proper section headings will save you time and serve as a reliable guide.

Write Prolifically

When you finally do start to write, do so without hesitation. Don’t stop to proofread or edit at all. There will be ample opportunity to make all corrections later. It’s important to get all of your thought down as soon as you have them. Complete as much of the proposal as possible before you stop to consider the flow of your writing.

Write In Order

Complete each section of your narrative before moving on to the next. Each section requires a different mindset and mixing thought processes across proposal sections is not a good idea. Grant reviewers will be able to tell that your thoughts are not consistent within a given section.
