If you and or your organization feel that you may be able to do a good amount of good for the local, state, or even national community but you just don’t have the funds perhaps you should be considering a government grant. Each year the government gives out millions of dollars to people and organizations that are a good fit to provide a solution to a problem that may exist.
This may leave you wondering where you need to go in order to get your hands on some of this free government money and if that is how you feel you should reconsider. Government grant money is only for those who are going to use it for its intended purpose and not to help you fly first class or buy that brand new car you’ve had your eye on. If you are however serious about making a difference in the world then you need to apply for your grant in the proper manner and sometimes the difference between getting a grant and not getting a grant lies in successful grant writing. Here are some tips to help you when tackling your grant writing:
• Write the perfect proposal: Any funding agency will require you to write a grant proposal and will want to see in that proposal exactly how you plan on spending the government’s money. In this process be as thorough as possible and don’t leave anything to chance. Include all relevant data that pertains to the grant you are trying to secure and give the grant committee everything they need in order to see that your plans are legitimate and plausible. • Apply only if you are qualified: Put yourself in the shoes of the grant committee. If you where to review a grant proposal wouldn’t you want to review one where the applicant actually stood a chance of getting the grant? Don’t waste your time or the committee’s with submitting a grant proposal that you know you have non shot at getting. You may say, ‘What do I have to lose?’ The answer is credibility; and one that is gone you may as well never apply for a grant again because you won’t be taken seriously. • Seek assistance: If this is your first time with grant writing you may need to get some help. Find a colleague who may have already gone through the grant writing process and see what light they can shed on the subject. There are also a number of resources online and even some workshops available from time to time that are all designed to help people with the grant writing process. When it comes to grant writing there are no short cuts. A well crafted grant proposal is your best shot at getting the grant money you are after. Just remember, no matter what that guy with the very ugly sports blazer on late night TV tells you, the government does not just hand out money to anyone so you have to be sure that your grant writing is the best it can possibly be. |
